Periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases 70% of tooth loss is caused by periodontal problems. Gingival(gum) health and treatment promotes easier chewing and better digestion. Gingivitis which is imflammation of gums is the early stage of periodontal diseases. In this stage bleeding of gums, redness and swelling can be seen. It may not disturb the patient except bad breath (halitosis). If not treated, it may cause the inflammation of periodontal tissues giving irreversible harm to gums and alveolar bone (jaw bone).

There becomes spaces (periodontal pockets)between the tooth and gum where bacteria can easily settle. As the disease progresses, tissue loss ocuurs and the teeth begin to shake resulting in tooth extraction.

Daily brushing and flossing is the basic requirement of a healthy mouth to remove dental plaque where becteria can settle otherwise the bacteria on the plaque causes the disease on the gums and the fibers that firmly attach the gum to the tooth lose their capacity forming periodontal pockets.


Bacterial plaque is colorless and constantly forms on the tooth surface. 4-12 hours after tooth brushing and flossing, bacterial plaque begins to form. that's why why tooth brushing and flossing should be done at least twice a day.

Calculus is a lumpy deposit that causes color change with stains on it. It can be cleaned by your dentist.


As your dentist advices, the teeth should be cleaned evey 6 months professionally. The teeth should be brushed regularly.
