It is a pain and disfunction syndrome of jaws. The jaw joint bis where the lower and upper jaws meet. Jaw joint disturbances affect some of head and neck mussels, ligaments ( hard connective tissue that holds bones together), teeth , cheek, lips and salivary gland. Jaw joint complaints may not be just on the joint but maybe on jaws, eyes, ears, nose and throat.
WHAT CONDITIONS LEAD TO JAW JOINT DISORDER
Clenching teeth and grinding, injuries and accidents, poor posture , extreme fatigue of the jaw mussels, one sided chewing habit, some systematic, psychological diseases, incompatibility between teeth.
THE SYMPTOMS OF JAW JOINT DISORDER
*Pain in jaws and cheeks due to clenching and grinding teeth
*Pain and pressure felt on ears, nose, neck and teeth and even nose and eyes
*Tinnitus, dizziness, weakness
*Insufficent (moves of jaws) function of jaws
*Pain in openning the mouth while eating or yawning
*Incompatility between teeth
*Pain in ears, ringing sound,hearing problems
*Sensitivity, shaking teeth
EXMINATION AND EVALUATION
It lasts about 30-35 minute. Dentist examines the muscle stress and sensitivity by palpation, hears the click sound of the jaws by stethoscope, and may ask for some diagnostic tests.
Fracture or joint damage can be seen with tomographic or direct film. Details of soft tissue, disc and fiber damages can be seen in magnetic resonance(MR). Dentist may ask for dental plaster in order to see the compatibility of teeth.
TREATMENT OF JAW JOINT DISORDERS
The main purpose of treatment is to organise the pressure in jaw joint and maintain the healthy jaw functions.
The treatments applied are such; treatment of teeth, removal of excessive pressure on jaw joint, using dental plaque, using artrocentesis (injection on joint), for disorders of disk using orthopedic appliance(splint).
Patient is advised to follow these instructions;
*Should take care of oral health
*Pay attention for right posture of jaws
*Eat soft food
*Should do the exercises the dentist has given,
*Should take the medicine advised
